New Year New You - Weight Loss

LifeestyleMK's Personal Trainer - Robb Henderson
The most popular resolution every New Year is to "LOSE WEIGHT" - but inevitably we may manage it for a month or so, and slowly old habits creep back...along with the weight and lethargy.  The LifestyleMK team looked at resolutions this week and why it's so hard to keep them  - and you can catch the show HERE but we wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to the man who has been providing us with brilliant fitness inspiration healthy life hacks - our Resident Expert - Personal Trainer, Robb Henderson.
Robb is a Personal Trainer as well as a class instructor and with a background in Psychology, and many years in organisational training behind him, he is teacher, motivator and your worst nightmare if you cheat your body!

Check out Robb's website here.

Every week on LifestyleMK you'll hear Robb give advice and support on a healthy body and mind - but here he is talking about why resolutions fail - and what YOU can do to ACHIEVE THOSE FITNESS GOALS:

NEW YEAR NEW YOU - What are you waiting for?

Robb Henderson, Personal Trainer

There is an apparently non-stop supply of cakes and chocolates in our office at the moment and I always laugh when I catch some one leaving with their 3rd or 4th hand-full of the day/morning and they sheepishly grin “but it’s Christmas – the diet’s starting in the new year”.
I’m not being a grinch – it just amuses me. It’s also not just December. It can happen on birthdays, holidays and so on, but Christmas seems to be THE time of year when most people just accept that they will over indulge in spending, drinking and especially eating.  The gym is definitely a lot quieter and health & fitness seems to go the back of people’s mind…..
But once Christmas is over – and we’re sat in front of the TV, our belly aching – we can start to feel a little remorseful and vow that the diet/exercise regime will start in the new year……. along with a whole list of other things that we want to improve.
I understand the logic behind it. It’s a new year so new calendars and dairies are required. Psychologically this provides a nice clear break from bad feelings and habits of the past as the old calendars and diaries are stored away or binned, the decorations are returned to the loft and the house cleaned up.
We have also been given Christmas gifts or bought in the sales – new toiletries, clothes, gadgets and so on – ready to be put to use to help and present to the world, our new and improved selves.
New Year really does make sense in terms of making resolutions and starting something new – but you can ask people how they are doing a month or two later and it’s not surprising to find that 80% have already been broken.
So how can we help the odds, make our resolutions stick and achieve our goals?  After doing some digging around (together with learning from experience) I’ve come up with hint and tips that may help:
Why are you waiting?
Try asking yourself why are you putting it off? Are you delaying because your scared? Do you need advice or help? Are there obstacles such as money/time/other people? If so, is there a way around them or an alternative? On the other hand it may be that you’re delaying because it’s not something that you really want…..
Why do you want to do it?
Ask yourself, is this something that you actually want to, or are you doing it because others want you to do it or that you think others want you to do?  If it is for someone else, whether that is your partner, family, public image it can add a lot more pressure on yourself, and then if you stumble or fail, it can cause a huge amount of guilt. Whatever challenges or changes you want to make – make sure you’re making them for the right reasons and you will be more likely to succeed.
What do you want to achieve? Set some goals.
It might sound simple but be realistic! If it’s something new then get advice/help e.g. if it’s health related then see a fitness instructor/personal trainer/online forums/professionals. Don’t be afraid to ask. – just make sure it’s your goals!
Set short, medium and long term goals/plans and make them SMART (Specific/Measurable/Achievable/Realistic/TimeBound – Locke & Latham, 1990). Studies have shown that setting these types of goals helps to improve both motivation and adherence to a plan as they can help show progress.
Change ONE thing at a time.
Setting too many goals can be overwhelming for the brain and body, and so one or both may fight-back making you give up completely.
There have been years of research that shows if you want to change something, change one thing at a time gradually adding in other/additional goals.
By easing them in, the body and mind are better able to cope with the additional demands of extra/more intensive goals, and from a motivational view, seeing the positive effects of one change will help encourage you to progress onto another.  Even if the first change is not successful on the first attempt, as it is only one – it is easier to try again.
Know your motivations & distractions.
What gets you going? What motivates you?
Are you someone that needs to be pushed? A negative image such as an unattractive photo of you on the fridge, a diseased lung, the threat of illness etc. can help motivate some people take action.
Alternatively – you may prefer the “pull” and attraction of a reward? Positive images of yourself, financial/material rewards,  or even the feel-good factor can help with motivation.
Also try to understand what distracts you – gaming, the internet, social media, tv…… can you incorporate these into your plans or can you avoid them?
On a similar note, knowing who your supporters are, that will help you when it gets tough and knowing who your “enemies” are that may try and pull-you down,  is also useful to understand. So that you know who you can turn to for support and who to ignore/avoid.
Have a back-up plan
Life is full of surprises that can throw up obstacles and barriers to us achieving our goals so it’s a good idea to think about what might happen. Injury/illness, an expensive bill and even holidays and parties can all cause disruptions. By thinking about them in advance, if and when they do occur – it is easier to pick yourself back up and get back on track.

Hope that it helps – it’s definitely worked/working for me – so I hope others might find some of it useful too and may start making those changes today rather than waiting.   I’m certainly not eating any mince pies this year!  One thing at a time...

John Muir Awards for the Parks Trust Youth Rangers

John Muir Awards presented to The Parks Trusts’ Youth Rangers
by Laura Tarry

Morning session (L-R): Gemini Harrison, Deiniol Edwards, Melissa Lindsay

Twelve Youth Rangers were presented with John Muir Awards by The Parks Trust Education team on Saturday 5 December.
The Youth Rangers celebrated at Howe Park Wood at an official awards presentation for their commitment to the programme.

Since February 2015, the Parks Trusts’ Youth Rangers have completed a number of tasks as part of their John Muir Award.  It’s a scheme that supports connections with and care for nature, landscape, and the natural environment – wild places.

Afternoon session (L-R): Back row, from left to right: Katy Barnett, Bethany Heathcote, Niamh Kennedy, Frances Barnes, Ayla Webb, Taya Webb. Front row: Isabel Shipp, Harry Noon, Eleanor Charman

To achieve a John Muir Award, each participant must:
  • Tackle all four Challenges – Discover, Explore, Conserve and Share their experiences of a wild place.
  • Complete the required time commitment
  • Show enthusiasm and commitment towards their Award involvement
  • Have an awareness of John Muir, his life and achievements
  • Have a sense of making a difference and doing something positive for wild places
The Parks Trust Education Ranger, Caylin Gans said : “Young people that attend Youth Rangers are very passionate and committed to conserving the environment and wild places. This Award is a way for us to acknowledge the Youth Ranger’s dedication through a nationally recognised award scheme.

“The John Muir Trust also promotes similar values to The Parks Trust and we feel that partnership work with similar organisations brings greater benefit overall.”

John Muir Award England Manager, Andy Naylor said: “I am delighted that the Youth Rangers have achieved their John Muir Awards.  This recognises their commitment and hard work as volunteers over the last 10 months.  It’s wonderful to see the Rangers engage in such a rich variety of activities including practical conservation tasks, wildlife monitoring, bushcraft skills and community action. The John Muir Trust also welcomes the opportunity to support The Parks Trust and its work to conserve local wildlife and wild places”.

To earn this Award, participants attended monthly Youth Rangers session as well as taking part in activities in their own free time. In total, the children spent 570 hours working toward their John Muir Award.

Activities as a group:
  • February – Helped to cut back vegetation on south facing bank of Walton Lake so the area could be more easily surveyed for grass snakes.
  • March – Lambing visit to Home Farm to learn about farming practices and use of grazing animals in land management.
  • April – Assisted our Community Rangers with site checks at Caldecotte Lake.
  • April– Great Crested Newt survey at Elfield Nature Park

  • September – Terrestrial invertebrate survey at Howe Park Wood.
  • October – Looked at aspects of water safety in summer and winter with Community Ranger team.
  • November – Planted daffodil bulbs in Campbell Park to increase numbers of early spring flowers in the parks.
Some examples of what the Youth Rangers did individually:
  • Went on walks in the parks with family and friends
  • Used a trail camera to observe nocturnal animals like badger, deer and fox
  • Climbed trees
  • Took photographs of plants and animals in the parks or in their gardens
  • Built insect hotels, hedgehog houses, bat boxes, bird houses and feeders
  • Planted trees and sowing wildflower seeds

"Frozen fever"

Audrey (as Anna), with the Rainbows
and their leader Ruth (as Elsa)
...no, not the latest Frozen short, but Lifestyle MK's Audrey was out with the Rainbows this week in a
Frozen-themed drama workshop.

As the Lifestyle team discussed on their show on Saturday, drama is one of the best ways to build confidence,  encourage teamwork, and develop creativity (catch it here  if you missed it).  So often creativity is squeezed out of schools, even at a young age, with great emphasis being placed on the "core" subjects.  Of course grammar, mathematics and science are important - they are the backbone of what we do in the world - but so is invention.  It is all very well having being able to construct the "self driving car", or the "homing shoes" - but you have had to have come up with the idea in the first place.
Dominic Wilcox

Audrey had the opportunity to speak with inventor Dominic Wilcox at the Times Educational Festival earlier this year, and he spoke of how important creativity is for children.  "It is a form of self expression," he said "I believe that there should be a creativity curriculum, or at least a way of building creativity into the curriculum."

Steam Co who organised the event at the Festival also added "Don't just ask children what they want to be, ask them what problems they want to solve..." this is the way to teach young people that they are capable of great things, but also impress upon them that they need the "basics" (English, Maths, Science etc) to help them achieve their goals.

Drama and the core subjects sit well together.  The workshop included dancing - counting, symmetry, terminology; the children helped tell their favourite story - speaking and listening, memory, presentation skills, literacy; and of course little can be achieved without teamwork - a skill that permeates through all walks of life - and as a group each child played their part and understood the significance of what they were doing alongside their peers.

Catch Lifestyle MK talking about the benefits of drama on SPREAKER

LifestyleMK: Saturdays 12 - 2pm on Secklow Sounds, Community Radio for Milton Keynes.
