We all scream for ice-cream!

Ever wondered why a Knickerbocker glory is so named?

On this week’s Harry & Edna on the Wireless, the vintage duo where joined by local ice cream manufacturers and retailers, Gallones (see their website HERE)

On the show, the dashing duo explore the 100 year history of Gallones and learn a few interesting facts about ice cream.

As for the Knickerbocker, the name comes from Dutch settlers in New York at the start of the twentieth century. The shape of the glass resembles the outfits worn by these settlers; knee length trousers which were worn tucked in – wide at the top and tapering down at the bottom.

The Knickerbocker glory was first described in the 1930’s, and at the time contained ice cream, gelatine, cream, fruit, meringue and sometimes liquor! The tall glass allows for layers of all sorts of ice cream and hidden treats.

Poster Boy on Harry & Edna on the Wireless

Harry & Edna on the Wireless recorded a special Battle of Britain show at the IWM Duxford Museum and were fortunate enough to interview WW2 Spitfire pilot Squadron Leader Ian Blair.

On the show they replayed 15 minutes of the interview but they have another 30 minutes with Squadron Leader Blair which will be featured in a future programme.
After the interview Squadron Leader Blair told Harry & Edna his picture was used in a wartime poster.

A little research found an image of a dashing young airman who became the poster boy of the RAF during World War II.  (For the original image, click HERE)

Squadron Leader Ian Blair, now 95, was 22 years old when the famous snap was taken in 1940 after his daring flying in north Africa earned him a medal.

But he didn’t realise his fame until two years later when, on a break in Bournemouth, he saw his face on a propaganda notice warning 'Careless Talk May Cost His Life'.

Pip pip!

Harry and Edna's "Fashion on the Ration" exhibition

Milton Keynes vintage doyens Harry & Edna temporarily swapped radio stations.

The Secklow Sounds presenters created a ‘pop up’ 1940’s fashion exhibition for English Heritage. The exhibition, called ‘Fashion on the Ration’ explains the history of utility, ‘make do & mend’ clothing and the changing fashions of the 1940’s.

The exhibition was on display at Audley End House and BBC Radio Essex popped over to have a word with Edna.
